Take US 31 north from Muskegon to Ludington exit, US 10 west.  Turn left onto Washington Avenue, Lake Street is approximately 1/2 mile on right.

Basic Keelboat- ASA 101

Northern Breezes Sailing School offers a terrific learn to sail program featuring a combination of the finest school in west Michigan, a Hunter 23 sailboat located on Pere Marquette Lake in Ludington, Michigan, and a beautiful west Michigan setting in which to learn.


This is a three session, 12-hour course taught by instructors certified by the American Sailing Association.  Classes meet over a three day period and are offered on a weekends with a Friday through Sunday format and also midweek classes running from Monday through Wednesday.  All classes are limited to three students, creating a small seminar environment providing for great skipper and crew training.   Each session starts with a briefing on the day's lesson and getting underway and ends with docking and securing the boat.


Each student will receive the ASA textbook, Sailing Made Easy, Federal Regulations, log book and advance preparation materials.


Course Outline

Day 1: Outboard engine, getting underway, tacking, points of sail, boat balance, trim, docking, securing the boat.

​Day 2: Review, tacking and gybing, sail trim, helming, crew overboard, heaving to.

Day 3: Review, reefing, crew overboard, solo checkout, written exam.


Course Fees

Course fee is $449, we offer a $99 discount for couples sharing materials.  Add a third student for $200.  Our cancellation policy is a full refund for cancellation at least seven days prior to the start of class, and a 50% refund for cancellation up to 4 days prior to the start of class.  If classes are cancelled due to weather or storm advisory, classes will be rescheduled or fees refunded at the participant's option.
