Course Prerequisite

Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101) is a prerequisite for this course.  Those having sailing and boating experience may be able to demonstrate on the water proficiency and successfully complete a written test in lieu of taking ASA 101.  The fee to test out of the ASSA 101 course is $99 and includes ASA dues for one year.  Call for more information.


Our Location

Freedom is docked in slip B-2 of the Ludington Municipal Marina located at 404 West Filer Street in downtown Ludington.



Sailing Courses


Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Charter Certification are taught in a combined four-day course aboard ​Freedom, our thirty-seven foot auxiliary sloop.  This is a four-day, liveaboard course.  Course fees include ASA textbooks, Coastal Cruising Made Easy and Bareboat Cruising Made Easy, class notes and ASA certification for both courses.  Students normally board the boat the night prior to start of class and stay aboard until the conclusion of the class.  The boat is normally docked in the marina overnight except for Saturday, when we spend the night at anchor.  All lunches are included and all meals from Saturday lunch through Sunday lunch are also included.


Course Outline

Day 1: Boat systems, battery, electrical, engine, prop walk, tacks and jibes,docking.

Day 2: Rules of the road, sound signals, buoys, lights, VHF, cruising tips, docking, anchoring

           written exam.

Day 3: Sail trim, crew overboard, reefing, heaving to, anchoring, navigation, chart problem.

Day 4: Navigation, safety systems, heavy weather sailing, written exam.


What to Bring  


Please bring clothing for all weather conditions, sleeping bag, towel, sunscreen, and swimwear. Navigation instruments will be available and you may purchase a set at discount if you need them.  Feel free to bring any navigation instruments you have, including hand-held nautical GPS products.


Course Fees

Course fee is $995 for the four-day, liveaboard course, including materials and ASA certification.  We offer a $95 discount for couples, any two people registering together and willing to share materials.  Our cancellation policy is to issue full refunds for cancellations received at least seven days prior to start of class and 50% refunds for cancellations received at least four days prior to start of class.  We will run classes with a minimum of two students, class size will be limited to four students unless you make special arrangements.
